Côte d’Ivoire is the world’s largest producer of raw cashew nut and processes only a modest share of it. The rest ships to India and Vietnam as raw nut, taking the shelling value with it. Drying capacity is one of the practical bottlenecks between the farm gate and a shelling line that can hold outturn.
The situation in Côte d'Ivoire
The largest agricultural processing economy in francophone West Africa, and the world’s largest producer of both cocoa and raw cashew. Abidjan gives it something its neighbours do not have: a deep-water port two days from the northern growing zones, which makes export-grade processing viable inland rather than only at the coast. It also means the country exports a great deal of unprocessed volume that could be processed at home, which is the gap most of these pages are about.

What raw cashew nut drying demands
Raw cashew nut is bought on outturn — the kernel yield a buyer can expect from a tonne of nut — and outturn is destroyed by moisture. Above 10 % the nut moulds in the bag on a six-week sea voyage; too dry and the kernel becomes brittle and breaks at shelling, which costs grade. The 8–10 % window is narrow and is worth several hundred dollars a tonne.
Harvest calendar
February to June, peaking in March and April in the northern zones around Korhogo, Bouaké and Bondoukou. The season opens earlier in the north than anywhere else in the region.
