Beninese cashew comes out of Borgou, Collines and Atacora, and the country has an unusually strong producer-organisation structure that aggregates smallholder nut into commercial lots. That structure is what makes conditioning viable — it puts enough volume through one point to justify equipment that no individual farmer could use.
The situation in Benin
Small, well-connected and increasingly organised around a handful of export chains it does genuinely well — pineapple, cashew and soy. Cotonou port serves Niger and Burkina as well as Benin, so the transit economy is large relative to the country. Producer organisations are unusually strong, which makes aggregating consistent raw material easier here than almost anywhere else in the region.

What raw cashew nut drying demands
Raw cashew nut is bought on outturn — the kernel yield a buyer can expect from a tonne of nut — and outturn is destroyed by moisture. Above 10 % the nut moulds in the bag on a six-week sea voyage; too dry and the kernel becomes brittle and breaks at shelling, which costs grade. The 8–10 % window is narrow and is worth several hundred dollars a tonne.
Harvest calendar
February to May, peaking in March. Cotonou port gives the crop a short route to a ship relative to the landlocked producers whose nut also transits Benin.
The working campaign window as the trade runs it. It shifts a fortnight either way with the rains.
