Papad and wafer duty

Papad drying systems — biomass hot air, humidity controlled

Weather is not a production schedule.

A papad drying system removes moisture from formed papad at a controlled temperature and an air velocity of 2.0–3.0 m/s, so the discs dry evenly without curling, cracking or case hardening. Replacing sun drying with a biomass hot air system removes weather dependency, shortens the cycle and makes final moisture repeatable batch to batch.

Indicative price of a biomass hot air generator, Ex-Works (EXW): USD 3,140–14,135

Shipping, customs clearance and local duties are extra. The final price depends on the configuration and is fixed in the written quotation.

Why sun drying costs more than it appears to

Sun drying has no fuel cost and three hidden ones: it stops when the weather does, it dries unevenly so breakage rises, and it exposes an unpackaged food product to dust, insects and handling. For anyone selling into organised retail or export, the third is usually the one that forces the change.

What controlled drying changes

  • Uniform moisture — every rack in the chamber sees the same air temperature and velocity, so the batch finishes together.
  • Lower breakage — even drying reduces the curling and edge-cracking that drives rejection rates.
  • Weather independence — production is scheduled, not hoped for.
  • Hygiene — drying happens in an enclosed, filtered chamber rather than in the open.
  • Repeatability — a recipe on the PLC reproduces the same cycle every time.

Supply outside West Africa

We accept orders from any country. West Africa is the market these systems are engineered around and where most of them go, but there is no territory we will not supply.

Lead time, warranty and scope of supply do not change with the destination: manufacture in 10–18 weeks from confirmed order and receipt of advance payment, warranty 12 months from date of shipment, and spares dispatched alongside the machines. For installation outside the region the buyer covers the team’s travel, accommodation and entry formalities — stated up front because it is a real line in the budget. Documentation and the operator interface are supplied in English and French; other languages on request.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a papad drying cycle take?

About four hours in a tray-loaded hot-air chamber held at 50–60 °C, against roughly six for the same papad in the sun — and the four hours are the same four hours whatever the weather is doing. Cycle length depends on thickness, formulation and starting moisture. The controlled system's advantage is not primarily speed — it is that the cycle is the same every time, which is what makes moisture and breakage predictable.

Does controlled drying change the taste or texture?

Drying at a controlled temperature and velocity avoids the case hardening that comes from drying the surface faster than moisture can migrate out of the centre. Held at 50–60 °C across a four-hour cycle, the result is a more consistent snap and fewer discs that look dry but still hold moisture inside — which is the failure that shows up later as softening in the pack.

Can the same chamber dry other products?

Yes. The chamber and generator are the same equipment used for fruit and vegetable drying and other products across the 40–100 °C range. Where products carry strong aromas or different hygiene requirements, plan separate zones or a cleaning protocol between product changes.
